Tourist Trap Scams, Mars Flexes, and Tupac Biographies

Show Notes & Highlights

Show Notes & Highlights

Topics Covered

  • Social media 'this or that' food polls and internet inability to follow binary voting rules.
  • Holiday side dishes: cranberry sauce consistency, cornbread dressing vs. standard bread baskets.
  • Tourist trap gastronomy: the infamous $150 wagyu cheesesteak at Barclay Prime in Philadelphia.
  • Restaurant quality regression: post-2019 declines in Italian dining, frozen scampi, and weeknight spaghetti standards.
  • Travel dining markups: downtown all-day pricing vs. local routine living expenses.
  • Bar tab ambush: automatic 20% gratuity additions, hidden fees, and tipping etiquette on $34 beer-and-shot combos.
  • Aggressive vendor hustles in tourist cruise ports (Jamaica woodcarvers, personal names, and panhandler parallels).
  • Cultural and linguistic blind spots: misheard Beach Boys lyrics ('Kokomo' vs. 'Poconos'), 'show tunes' vs. TV themes, and Slow Jamz verses.
  • Linguistic idioms and pronunciation traps: 'could care less' vs. 'couldn't care less', and reading vs. speaking 'hyperbole'.
  • Geography and historical naming conventions: Kansas City, Missouri and Lafayette Street's Revolutionary War namesake.
  • The Mars vs. Europe hypothetical: ultimate extraterrestrial social flex vs. grounded cultural travel on a $2k monthly stipend.
  • Television critique: Amazon Prime's 8-episode Carrie adaptation, Stephen King themes, telekinesis, and youth bullying.
  • The cyberbullying controversy: online harassment mechanisms vs. the power of putting the phone down.
  • Unsanitized sports and music journalism: Jeff Pearlman's biographies on Tupac Shakur and the Kobe-Shaq Lakers.
  • Celebrity hagiography vs. truth: why estate-approved and subject-authorized documentaries produce fabricated narratives.
  • The logistics of film sets: Tupac's erratic behavior, onset substance abuse, and spontaneous tattoos during Poetic Justice.
  • Weekly long-form journalism: the OJ Simpson mob lead, medical AI translation risks, and Texas school policing data.
  • Film critique: A24's Prime Time starring Robert Pattinson, examining the lack of central conflict, antagonist, or narrative arc.
  • Sports trivia and economics: NFL Super Bowl referees receiving championship rings for high-paying part-time schedules.

Best Questions

  • Why do social media users struggle to adhere to binary 'this or that' polling rules?
  • At what price point does an elevated comfort food (like a $150 cheesesteak) become an outright scam rather than a luxury experience?
  • Are downtown dining and nightlife establishments weaponizing automatic gratuity to exploit distracted patrons?
  • Why do childhood cultural misunderstandings and misheard lyrics persist well into adult life?
  • Would the unmatched historical clout of walking on Mars outweigh the sustained lifestyle experience of a year in Europe?
  • Is cyberbullying an inescapable social trauma or an avoidable problem solved by logging off?
  • Why are audiences increasingly accepting sanitized, subject-controlled celebrity documentaries over independent journalism?
  • Can a film with elite acting (like Robert Pattinson in Prime Time) succeed without an active antagonist or narrative conflict?
  • How does the part-time compensation and championship ring prestige of NFL officiating compare to standard executive side gigs?

Best Observations

  • Vacation expenses compound invisibly because travelers incur peak downtown pricing across every meal, coffee, and snack, unlike residents operating on fixed grocery baselines.
  • Automatic gratuities on high-priced urban bar tabs frequently trick patrons into double-tipping unless service staff deliberately disclose the surcharge.
  • The ultimate modern social media flex is no longer luxury travel, but access to experiences that cannot be purchased with money, like leaving Earth entirely.
  • Reading words exclusively in print creates pronunciation blind spots that only surface through awkward social exposure.
  • Sanitized, subject-approved documentaries and biographies rob historical figures of their humanity by eliminating their flaws, erratic choices, and genuine personal struggles.
  • Independent reporting like Jeff Pearlman's reveals that historical chaos is often caused by simple human immaturity, substance abuse, and bad impulses rather than masterminded conspiracies.
  • Cinematic character studies without narrative stakes, legal tension, or central conflict feel like empty calories, regardless of lead acting talent.

Best Debate

The Mars Walk vs. European Residency Hypothetical: Darius presented an all-expenses-paid dilemma between spending 10 minutes walking on the surface of Mars versus living anywhere in Europe for a full year with a $2,000 monthly stipend. Jordan chose Mars, arguing that setting foot where no ordinary human can ever purchase access represents the ultimate life experience, Instagram profile flex, and social media content. Darius countered by selecting Europe, noting that while Mars offers a singular flex, a year of authentic European cultural exploration, travel, and personal lifestyle immersion provides far greater sustained enjoyment than a 10-minute spacewalk, even on a modest $2,000 monthly budget.

Transcript
[00:00:00]JordanBut I mean, I really thought about this and I've been seeing a lot of posts from black people about how they haven't always had great experiences being in Europe traveling and stuff. So I'm going to say **** it and go to Mars. I did some great pictures. It'll go really cool on my Instagram. That's definitely going to be my profile picture. I'm going to be vlogging up there.
[00:00:20]DariusWelcome to Out the Trunk with Jordan and Darius. My name is Darius. That's these all up in the area on all socials.
[00:00:26]JordanAnd I'm Jordan. That's Jordan to be writing on all socials.
[00:00:28]DariusThis is our segment we've titled What's On Our Mind, where we let you guys know, well, what's on our mind, what we saw on the internet, what, you know, the things that we want to discuss. And so I have one quick intro that I, so a lot of people did it and you did it to people. So the Thanksgiving thing on that's going on like this or that.
[00:00:52]JordanYeah, this or that, yeah.
[00:00:53]DariusWhy do people struggle with instructions?
[00:00:57]JordanFirst of all, because it's my phone, I do what the **** I want.
[00:01:01]DariusAnd I know it doesn't matter. It's some stupid internet thing. But of course we all want everything.
[00:01:05]JordanIf you're just going to pick them both, then I feel, I hear you. So I think my thinking was it's one of those things where like, I really truly love both. So that's why I do it with the select few of those.
[00:01:19]DariusEveryone did it though.
[00:01:21]JordanI know. And I think, so I think the ones I selected, I think I selected both for cranberry sauce over cornbread. And I was like, I don't want people to think I don't love cornbread because that's anti-black. So I was like, let me select both.
[00:01:33]DariusWell, those people would not be able to read because it does not say choose which one you like. It says which one is better. And so it's entirely possible to like one food more than another and still like the other food.
[00:01:46]JordanThat is true. I think the thing too is because it was not specific in terms of which kind of given food. Like it was cranberry sauce, but it was like the berries as opposed to the congealed kind. I like both, but I mean, so there's that too. Like I prefer a cornbread casserole to cornbread, but I like cornbread also.
[00:02:06]DariusI am partial to cornbread dressing. I don't actually like just like, I mean, okay, I eat, I don't like bread like that. So I like cornbread, but within the bread family, it's fine. But just generally speaking, Really. It's like a vehicle for a sandwich is fine. Yeah. Or a vehicle for.
[00:02:26]JordanSo you don't like bread by itself is what you say?
[00:02:28]DariusYeah, just like when you go to the restaurant and just put bread and butter on the table. I'm nibble at it, but I could live without it. It's not a big deal to me.
[00:02:34]JordanGot you.
[00:02:34]DariusOkay, I hear you. But like if, you know, it's charcuterie board, you need something to put the meat and cheese on. You know, it's not that I don't like bread. It's just I don't just eat. I don't look forward to bread in that way. So.
[00:02:46]JordanNo, I get you.
[00:02:47]DariusYou know, I know that makes me a little weird, but heading into a topic, I must I have a confession. All right. So I was recently in Philadelphia and I think I told my first Internet lie. Yeah. I went and got a tourist trap cheesesteak and I posted that this was good. It was not good.
[00:03:13]JordanAnd you felt like a ******* hoe for mine, didn't you? Yeah, because I looked at it. I'm like, there's no way that's worth 100. There's no way you ate that and thought that's worth a pair of shoes.
[00:03:23]DariusI had four bites of it and politely asked for my check so I can go watch some basketball.
[00:03:30]JordanAnd this is Mr. All restaurants suck.
[00:03:33]DariusI mean, they do, but I as far as restaurant food while I was there, I had good food, but it was always like during the day at a food hall or something like that. But my night reservations for dinner, 0 for three.
[00:03:48]JordanThat's crazy.
[00:03:49]DariusIt's just restaurants, man. I don't know what's going on with them. These are places that I'd been before and that were good. Yeah. But yeah, I got it down or. Yeah, just I don't know. I went to a restaurant. I'm not going to name them just because I don't like doing that. But it was an Italian restaurant. It was an Italian restaurant and I went in 2019 and I literally ran back and it was phenomenal. I got a shrimp scampi and a Sunday gravy, which is Italian's way for saying spaghetti and meatballs, basically.
[00:04:23]JordanOkay, got you.
[00:04:25]DariusAnd you know, the bread that you get for free with it. And what amazing meal in 2019, one of the best Italian restaurants I'd ever been to. This time, straight mid. The shrimp scampi straight out of the sea pack, like the freezer bag that's already peeled in devein that has no flavor. There was like no natural ocean seafood flavor in the shrimp. It was just straight up sea pack shrimp drowned in butter, garlic butter. And look, I'm not opposed to bland shrimp drowned in garlic butter, but that's not exactly what a shrimp scampi is supposed to be. And the spaghetti just tasted like Tuesday night at mom's house. it just was fine. Okay. Yeah. like your mom got off work and she had to put spaghetti, had to cook something. So she made spaghetti and that's what it tasted like. It was.
[00:05:13]JordanYou hear that, Miss Thomas?
[00:05:14]DariusYeah, I mean, you know, there's nothing wrong with it. just tasted like weeknight spaghetti that you got to put up. You got to just, you got to some kids got to eat, got to put some on the table. And that's just what it tasted like. And, you know, so my question to you is, what is have you ever fallen for a tourist trap and what was it?
[00:05:41]JordanTourist trap, I'm trying to think, you know, okay. They almost got me in, I think I was in Jamaica. And so I don't know if you've been Jamaica on a cruise.
[00:05:53]DariusI was there for like six hours. You get off and you walk.
[00:05:55]JordanGotcha. Okay. the thing about when you see vendors, don't tell them your name because they'll carve your **** in there. And so I was, I knew that, but I was walking through the, and there's like people, you just try to say no to everybody really quickly. it's like, imagine, I mean, they're not homeless, but it's like the aggression is that of like a panhandler, you know? And so you're just like turning down panhandlers left and right metaphorically. And the guy was just like, oh, hey, like, how long are you going to be here? Or is this your first time here? Something like that. I answered like a simple question. Mom was like, no, don't say anything. And the funny part is she said my name when she said, no, don't say anything. So I'm like, could have actually carpeted right then and there and not have been screwed. But I think that's probably the closest I've been gotten, closest I've gotten to being got with a tourist trap.
[00:06:46]DariusYeah, man, it's I have a beef with all the influence who said that sandwich was good. There's no way they were being paid to say it. There's no way they're being truthful in their assessment of that sandwich. Now I got some scallops that were phenomenal. Like some diver bay sea scallops. But and I had a shrimp cocktail, but like you can't **** that up. It's literally just shrimp and cocktail sauce. But I had a phenomenal Manhattan there. But all in all, a $230 tab, almost $300 after tax and tip. And it was a straight up scam. So that was the first lie I've ever told on Instagram when I said that steak was just okay.
[00:07:31]JordanGot you. know what? I felt got this weekend actually. I went downtown Raleigh and I bar hopped. I had a friend in town. We had a couple people together. So we, you know, bar hopped and ****. And it just felt like the prices just kept going up. Like it was just like, what? Yeah, man, I don't know what happened. Actually, no, I was at UNCG's homecoming, their black party they do every year. Their bar automatically included 20% gratuity. Yeah. Well, they tell you when they do it, but you still kind of feel a little bit like, you know, taken aback by it, you know?
[00:08:07]DariusYeah, I popped into a sports bar to watch, you know, it was an NBA opening weekend and I'm in a hotel, so I don't have I'm not, I don't have about apps, I don't have nothing. So nothing, yeah. Most of the games are on peacock and **** so you can't even watch them on the TV, TV. So I popped to a sports bar in Chinatown to watch one of the games, I forget the game, and I got a beer and a shot. Coors Light shot, and it was $24, which I thought, hi, but you're in Philadelphia, you're downtown. Didn't know it included gratuity. So then I put another 10 on top of that. So I ended up paying $34 for a beer and shot. And then when I, so I knew, I didn't, I was like, I felt like I got, but didn't know. And then when I, because I had tapped out, And I had started talking to somebody and decided to stay for an extra drink. And I got another beer. And he explicitly told me, like, there's a tip on this. I think he almost felt bad. He was like, just so you know, there's a tip on the tab already. It sort of gave me the permission structure to not tip a second time. And I appreciate him for that because I just, you know, he didn't have to do that.
[00:09:17]JordanSo you'd have paid 70 bucks for $10 worth of alcohol.
[00:09:23]DariusTraveling is got to have your bag right for that. That's not.
[00:09:27]JordanYes, yeah, for sure. Absolutely.
[00:09:30]DariusEven if it's like you think you can skimp it, but you can't because I mean, my morning life is $8. I went out for breakfast at a diner. Also like You're in downtown. So it's like you're playing going out prices for your whole day. Right. When you went downtown, you were just there. Your regular day was spent under normal expenses. So you ate normal expense. But I'm doing breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee, snacks, all that on downtown pricing. And it'll run you.
[00:10:05]JordanYeah.
[00:10:06]DariusBut yeah, man, I got got, but I had a good time in Philly, man. That was, as the kids say, Philly owes me nothing. I had a blast. The only down, the only thing was that scam, the Barclay, I'm going to name the restaurant, but the steakhouse I went to where I got the $150 cheese steak, there's only one of them. You can Google it. It's out in them, but it's a scam. I'm sure their regular steaks are great, but everything else I had there was good. But that menu item in and of itself is a scam.
[00:10:34]JordanYeah, if I'm going to pay that much for a cheese steak, I need to have gold in it, literally. Like there's that restaurant that has gold and gold flakes in their food.
[00:10:41]DariusI mean, it better have that. The ingredient list justifies the price point, but it just didn't taste good. And at the end of the day, that's what matters. Right. So let's go on to the next topic, man. This is on you blind spots.
[00:10:57]JordanOh yeah. So I was texting a friend like last week, maybe a week or two ago, I can't remember. And she was telling me how there's that Beach Boys song, about going on vacation. It was like Aruba, Jamaica. I want to take you to that song. And she was saying that when she was a kid, she thought it was taking to the Poconos, but it's actually Kokomo. I think it's like a beach place or something like a tropical location. And I was like, yeah, I thought it was Kokomo too, or that they alternated, you know, it's got me thinking of like **** that I thought was one thing that meant something totally different. Like the phrase show tunes. Like, women say like, or people in TV shows in the 90s would say like, that dude's probably gay because he liked show tunes or whatever. I always thought show tunes meant theme songs. So I was like, what's wrong with liking the Fresh Prince song? Like, I didn't, you know, I didn't get it. I didn't realize it meant songs from Broadway.
[00:11:46]DariusOh, yeah. I kind of knew that was theater based. my one of my, I guess one of my famous ones. that Jamie Foxx twisted Kanye West song.
[00:12:00]JordanYeah. Slow jams.
[00:12:01]DariusYeah. I thought it was a little a needle instead of a little Anita. Yeah.
[00:12:07]JordanThat was my heroin.
[00:12:10]DariusI guess I don't. It never made sense. And Anita Baker fits with the theme of it. But, you know, people is so. To stall us out. We, have Googled the lyrics on our phone. We didn't have Spotify with the lyrics.
[00:12:24]JordanYeah.
[00:12:25]DariusAnd I maintain that's cheating. Not learning the lyrics on your own and Googling them.
[00:12:30]JordanOh, well, yeah.
[00:12:30]DariusThat's not, that's not how that, that's cheating. It's like doing the cliff notes on the book instead of reading the book.
[00:12:36]JordanYeah. I do use Shazam to find the name of the song so I can add it to my phone. I do that all the time with Siri and Alexa for sure. Yeah, I'm trying to think of like other like knowledge blind spots like that. Oh, like, you know, this is the phrase, have your cake and eat it too. Yeah. Apparently it's actually, you want to have your Kate and Edith too. Meaning two women, like their names.
[00:13:04]DariusI understand why they made that a little bit more generic. Get the same sentiment across, but I understand why they went with a more generic one. Another one a lot of people mess up is, what is it? Couldn't care less, which means you do care. Or it's I could care less, which means you do care, but it's actually couldn't care less. Correct. That's one that I cleaned up. I know for the longest I pronounce hyperbole, hyperbole, because I'd only ever read it. In the written text, yeah. I embarrassed myself quite famously by saying that word amongst, like just, I was in my early 20s and I said it and people were like, what the **** are you talking about? I was at a party. It was quite embarrassing. I still get **** about that. So do you have any other ones?
[00:14:01]JordanOh, for the longest time, I did not know Kansas City was in Missouri. Not for a long time. I think I was a teenager when I realized it. Like I was talking to somebody, I was working at a grocery store and somebody was talking about Kansas City or something like that, whatever. And had I ever been or whatever go. And I was like, what would I go to Kansas for? And they're like, you know, it's in Missouri, right? And I was like, get the **** out of here. And they're like, yeah, it's in Missouri. But so I didn't know that for until I was like 16 or 17. Yeah.
[00:14:25]DariusThat's also pretty stupid though. Like why is it?
[00:14:28]JordanThat is dumb as hell. Why put that there?
[00:14:30]DariusI'm sure there's a historical reason.
[00:14:32]JordanYeah.
[00:14:33]DariusThis is a bit obscure. Most people would, this isn't like something that most people had right. But it was not until Hamilton came out and the character in the first act, Marquita Lafayette. I didn't know every Lafayette St. was named after that dude. I just thought that was like, but he was a Revolutionary War figure from France and he, fought on our behalf and went back to France. And yeah, every Lafayette Street, I mean, probably not everyone, but when you see a lot, most of it's probably named after Marquita Lafayette, the you wouldn't know people would know him as the Hamilton character. So gotcha.
[00:15:08]JordanOkay.
[00:15:09]DariusYeah, that's. but that's one that like nobody knows I say yeah that's not a I don't feel bad about not people I'm sure mad.
[00:15:16]JordanPeople thought like it was just a bunch of Creole that did a bunch of crazy ****.
[00:15:20]DariusI mean that might fit the bill French French war fighter might have been Creole crazy did you have any other ones?
[00:15:33]JordanTrying to think no off the top of my head hmm Yeah, that's it. I think pretty much. Those are the two biggest two main ones that I had, at least from like growing up and **** Yeah, you got any more?
[00:15:51]DariusNo, I did Google famous misheard lyrics and all the responses are like predominantly white bands. I don't even know what the **** is Eiffel 65. So.
[00:16:01]JordanIs that a great band or a song?
[00:16:03]DariusThat's the name of the band and the song is Blue. And it's misheard is I need a guy or I believe I will die. But it's actually I'm blue. Oh, I'm blue.
[00:16:17]JordanOkay.
[00:16:18]DariusYeah. You know, I went to an integrated school, so I heard a lot of these.
[00:16:21]JordanYeah, I just didn't know what they were.
[00:16:23]DariusSo yeah. All right. We're going to head over into a random hypothetical. learn how to spell that. And so you win an all expense paid prize, right? You don't have to worry about a time, but you have to pick between one of them. You get to do 10 minutes walking on the surface of, we're gonna say Mars, because people have actually been on the moon. It only makes sense if you're going to some place no one's ever been, right? So 10 minutes walking on the surface of Mars or an entire living anywhere in Europe with a $2,000 monthly budget, stipend, whatever. Which would you choose?
[00:17:04]JordanI mean, even with the currency exchange rate, I don't know how much like balling out I could do in Europe off 2 grand. But I mean, I really thought about this and I've been seeing a lot of posts from black people about how like they haven't always had great experiences being in Europe traveling and stuff. So I'm going to say **** it and go to Mars. I did some great pictures. It'll go really cool on my Instagram. That's definitely going to be my profile picture. I'm going to be vlogging up there.
[00:17:31]DariusYou only get 10 minutes, but you can be like, what? Oh, you went to Thailand? I left the planet.
[00:17:36]JordanYeah, **** you.
[00:17:40]DariusI literally left the planet.
[00:17:42]JordanWhat's that song? You see me? I'm on some out of town ****. Yeah.
[00:17:46]DariusLiterally out of the planet.
[00:17:47]JordanYeah, that's beneath my pay grade. I don't even do that ******* earthly human ****.
[00:17:51]DariusYou're traveling on a plane. I was on a spaceship.
[00:17:55]JordanYeah.
[00:17:57]DariusThat's pretty dope, actually. That's an ultimate flex.
[00:18:00]JordanNo, I did ask. It's like, oh, you went to Vegas. Cool. I went to Mars.
[00:18:04]DariusWhere I went, you literally cannot buy. It does not matter what you do for a living.
[00:18:09]JordanNothing.
[00:18:09]DariusI went someplace you cannot purchase.
[00:18:11]JordanCorrect.
[00:18:13]DariusI'm not that adventurous, man. I'm going to Europe. Although two grand a month is not actually very much.
[00:18:20]JordanIt's like lunch money.
[00:18:22]DariusHonestly, I think that's what you pay in food. But Yeah. I looked into doing a little overseas travel next year. And yeah, I don't know. It just, it's just that's what I would pick if I were choosing between the two, because while it is Timon is doing something no one else has ever done, I just I feel like I would just enjoy it more. Yeah. you know, just touring Europe for a month or a year, basically.
[00:18:54]JordanYeah, I was going to do a gap.
[00:18:55]DariusDifferent. You can do the different, you know, go to different countries and do different things. And that just sounds like more my speed, you know, so. All right. So we got you logged in as heading to Mars and you got me logged in as gallivanting across Europe on a shoestring budget. So we heading into your topic, man. It's kind of self-explanatory. So what you what you got?
[00:19:24]JordanSo I just finished there's a new show called Carrie on Amazon. It's a new adaptation retelling of the Stephen King novel called Carrie. It's really, really dope. They casted a lot of actors that at least I had never really seen before. I won't say like no names, but I hadn't seen any of their work before. Everybody bodied it. I think it's like 8 episodes. So it's pretty quick to get through. And it's I think now is kind of a perfect time for that kind of show because of the advent of social media and cyber bullying and just, there's a quote I heard where it's like, back in the day, when you were a bully, you had to see like the look on somebody's face when you like hurt their feelings or just did something really bad to them, or abuse them or whatever the case may be. Whereas now you can just type and go on about your day and you know, who knows how that impacts somebody, whatever, you know. So I thought that was a really cool twist. Quick interjection.
[00:20:18]DariusCyberbullying is fake. Just turn your phone off. Like it's when you were bullied at school, you couldn't leave school. Like you were constrained, like, but cyberbullying is 100% fake. You could literally just log off.
[00:20:30]JordanWell, true. But so in this situation, whether they all go to school, it's a small town that everybody knows each other. So it's, you know, if I spread this rumor about you, everybody knows it and they all like, it's just a little more.
[00:20:42]DariusWell, that's not just that's not cyber bullying. That's no, I know.
[00:20:45]JordanBut I'm saying you can initiate the rumor via the Internet goes out quicker and then it spreads to the town via word of mouth.
[00:20:55]DariusFair. But generally speaking, cyber bullying is fake. Log off. Once you once you put your phone in your pocket, it doesn't even exist anymore. You could just go about the world and doesn't matter. So sorry for interrupting you, though.
[00:21:09]JordanAnd so also it's a have you seen the movie Chronicle?
[00:21:13]DariusI have not, no.
[00:21:13]JordanOkay, so it's really, really good. It's got a kind of a feel of that where the Carrie is telekinetic. So you have her learning her powers and kind of coming into terms with herself and standing up to the, you know, people that do her harm, which is the payoff is so great because the **** they do like in the movie, the original movies in the books, they do bad **** of course, but Christian was at the prom scene. In this show, the prom scene is just like the needle in the haystack, not to spoil anything, but like the **** that this one kid does to her is like otherworldly evil. You know what I mean? Like on some, like I can't even think, like if Darth Vader was a teenager type **** like that's kind of the type of stuff she does. I want to give it away, you know, for the audience. But so that was really cool. It's also a lot about like parenthood and the way that parents try to protect their kids and the positive and negative effects of that, which I think is really dope because you don't always see the cons to that in film and television these days. Yeah, it's just a really good show. It's there's no filler episodes. There's no like ********. There's no, oh, we're going to put two episodes here just to get to the finale. Correct. Exactly. Like it's a great way of breaking down each character, showing their family life and how they got the way they are, you know, in a way that's not like a cheap villain backstory. You see in some movies sometimes, you know, yeah, really good show. Definitely recommend it for sure. And it's again, the message of the show is not to take the high road, so to speak, which I really like.
[00:22:49]DariusNice, nice, nice. Have not been watching much TV at all outside of sports just because yeah, just not a time for it. But I have been reading You know, as you know, I've been offline for two plus weeks now and it's amazing how quickly, how much, how quickly you get productive again. But I was recently in Philadelphia and I wasn't going out while I was there. I was, you know, in the room by 11 ish. And so I'd have plans at like 10 that morning. And so I wake up at six, 630, go get some breakfast and then either eat breakfast or come back to my room and I'd have like two hours, sorry, I'd have like two hours of time before I had to, whatever ticket I had that day, the museum or whatever. So I would just read a book on the Kindle and I finished two books, 2 Jeff Perlman books, his Tupac book and his book on the Kobe Lakers, the first one, the Kobe Shaq Lakers. And so... Do you read circus? Yes, Yeah, that one's good.
[00:23:50]JordanI read that one. Yeah.
[00:23:51]DariusAnd so the Tupac book, only God can judge me. was the one that was I enjoyed that one a lot. You know, it's it starts slow because he is a reporter. So he does like an exhaustive trip through his childhood. And like, you know, how many more stories, how many stories of his mom's a crackhead, you know, he had to move out. Right. But once you get into adulthood, it's it's one of the few Tupac accounts that isn't hagiography. He doesn't like he focus on his personal shortcomings.
[00:24:26]JordanYeah.
[00:24:28]DariusAs an adult reading it is interesting because almost all of Tupac's erratic behavior can be explained by the fact that he was just drunk and high. He was 23. Yeah. No, he was just drunk. He was a drunk. Oh my God. There's the reason he mentioned Hennessy that many times.
[00:24:42]JordanI mean, rest in peace, of course. But you know.
[00:24:44]DariusOh my goodness. And it's just like, I don't know, man, as an adult, I'm like, I would have hated this dude. Like, He would show up to sets hours late and he would just improvise lines. Almost everyone who actually had to work with him was just like, oh my God. It was like, also he was just like pretty stupid. He would just like **** ** things all the time and just make terrible decisions. He got himself killed because he decided to punch some gang member in Vegas for no reason. He's just like, people have all these grand theories about what got him killed and what happened was him and Sug were affiliated with one gang and then someone from his crew pointed out Orlando, another dude, Orlando Anderson, who was walking through the casino of an arrival gang. And he walked up to him, he punched him and they jumped him and he shot and killed him later. And it's like, you just not done that. That was stupid.
[00:25:35]JordanAnd his fiance, Kadada Jones, literally told him, like, just stay home tonight. Stay in tonight. Don't go out. Similar to Cesar's wife, ironically, although granted one was betrayed when just did some **** ****.
[00:25:49]DariusHe also like, he got the thug life tattoo in the middle of filming Poetic Justice, which caused all sorts of continuity issues.
[00:25:56]JordanYeah.
[00:25:56]DariusIt's just like just doing stupid **** stupid, unprofessional. Oh my God, I hated them at the end of that book. It's like, imagine you're John Singleton and you're trying to film a movie and your ******* lead male actor goes and gets a tattoo in the middle of it.
[00:26:12]JordanRight.
[00:26:13]DariusAnd no, people don't film movies in chronological order. Like it's.
[00:26:15]JordanNo. And his budget probably wasn't crazy enough to have a bunch of makeup and all that, you know?
[00:26:20]DariusAnd he had to like, he's like, he was so ****** because he had, they still hadn't shot the love scenes yet. So he had to like work around that. And it's just, you know, Yeah, he, his womanizing was, I mean, he was a rich rapper in his early 20s. The womanizing is pretty par for the course, but we do sort of like yada yada past the whole fact that he went to jail for rape.
[00:26:45]JordanYeah.
[00:26:45]DariusIt's people just think and choose when this stuff. We do.
[00:26:48]JordanWe do.
[00:26:50]DariusYeah, we do. His biggest song, California Love, his first verse is, I don't bail fresh out.
[00:26:55]JordanOf jail, California Dream.
[00:26:56]DariusI don't bail for what, sir. I thought we went through a whole reckoning where this stuff's supposed to matter now.
[00:27:07]JordanDo you think he did it?
[00:27:08]DariusYeah, 100%. There's no way given his behavior and given his propensity for substance abuse. And when you compare it to when the context of his sexual behavior in other places like Jeff Pearlman, he's a journalist, so he can't say it outright, but.
[00:27:28]JordanRight.
[00:27:30]DariusOne of Tupac's friends from the Outlaws, I think, walked in on him in at some sex party in Vegas, and he was with two French models. And I'll spare people the details, but yeah, basically tried to pawn the French model off on his friend who walked in it. His friend's like, I'm good. He's like, no. And the French model is like, no, we're just here for you. And his friend sensing it was not a good look, was like, hey, I'm good. I'm just here, like, say what's up, whatever, whatever. And there was another woman who a year earlier accused him of something similar, but the police just kind of botched the investigation. There's no doubt in my mind he did that. Not even close. And, you know, it's again, when people pick and choose when these things are supposed to matter. But no, Tupac, great rapper, probably a terrible human being. But that's why I don't like this new trend of biographies and documentaries where the subject has control over it. Because it's fake. So I straight up am like boycotting. If I find out, I mean, I've said this on the pod before, but like I find out any sort of piece of biography or documentary has signed off from the subject. I'm not watching it. Right. Because I just I don't have any interest in that. But no, I mean, it wasn't all bad. Like he they talk about his like is like his acting talent was almost more than his rapping talent. He just was like, yes, he people just And when you, I went back and watched the movie, and he was only in five movies, I think. Juice, Poetic Justice, Gridlock, Above the Rim, and something else I'm forgetting.
[00:29:12]JordanYeah.
[00:29:13]DariusAnd he is magnetic. And you know, it's like, who, which director at the end was like, we had to film all of his close-ups during the morning session because afternoon he would just get so stoned. He'd be too high. He'd be so red if he couldn't zoom in on his face anymore. And it's just like, it's someone who I try to think about the fact that he's 23 and, he died when he was 25, but thinking about it as a 38 year old who like thinking about how much of A logistical nightmare had been to plan around this dude. It's just like, yeah. But no, read it. Jeff Perlman's only guy can judge me. It's a quick read. He's a really good writer. Five and six hours. I went and bought I read his Kobe, his three ring circus book. And then I went and bought his book on Barry Bonds and the Yankees and all of that. And it's in the queue. And so been getting a lot of reading done, man. I'm compiling a list of all, like every morning I just open up, I got subscribed to like 5 or 6 news sites. And every morning I open them up and read, you know, what looks interesting. And I've been compiling a list of the things that I found interesting that I read throughout the week. And I'm going to try to structure them in like shorter pieces, middle pieces, longer pieces, and just share them. I don't know how to share it, but share them later. But just to highlight a few that I've recently read, there's the New York Times had a new like lead on the OJ case. Apparently some mob member was alleged to have been at the basically alleging that OJ had helped that night.
[00:30:51]JordanI do believe that.
[00:30:52]DariusYeah. his bloody clothes are never found, the murder weapon was never found. And I got to the end of the piece about 30 minutes. It's a good read. And I got to the end of the piece. I feel like they never found the smoking gun. They just kind of, it's a lot of hearsay, but it's still an interesting piece. It's still an interesting thing to read. And as we get further away from it, all the principles of the case are dead. So it's kind of, you know, and then I read something interesting about how AI translator, you know how translations You can translate something word for word and you can still lose the kind of the meaning. Right.
[00:31:26]JordanYeah.
[00:31:27]DariusYou know, this is English for English, but like the famous Louisiana case where the defendant said, I want a lawyer dog. And so he's like, there's no such thing as a lawyer dog, but like me, you would know what that means. Right. And so AI translation in medical settings is causing issues because certain words can mean different things. They're trying to, I read a piece in Slate, I think, and it's just like, should we, add more regulation to it? And I'm kind of 50-50 on it. But that was pretty good. And then in the least surprising news of the day, I've read another piece about how, you know, because the
