Full Episode Transcript

Darius: What do you want to watch next week, man?

Jordan: Let's see. We're doing a lot of slashes lately. You want to do a drama?

Darius: Yeah, sure.

Jordan: Okay, let's do. Have you seen The Judge, Robert Downey Jr.?

Darius: Yeah, I saw that in theaters when it came up. We can, I can go.

Jordan: Hey everybody, welcome to Out the Trunk Pod with Jordan Darius. My name is Jordan. That's Jordan to be writing on all socials.

Darius: And I'm Darius, that's Steve's I love you area on all socials.

Jordan: And this is our movie review segment. For this episode, we're going to be reviewing your next little slasher film for Halloween. Happy Halloween, everybody.

Darius: Happy Halloween, everybody.

Jordan: Y'all be safe and **** out there. Be safe.

Darius: Ladies wear the costumes with the *** out. You're not too grown. Let's do it.

Jordan: Yes. Shout out to all the Velmas out there. Y'all the real VPs.

Darius: ***** out. That's the whole point of why we are outside on Halloween.

Jordan: This is literally the point of Halloween.

Darius: Costumes with your *** out, please.

Jordan: Yes. This movie came out, speaking of ***** out, because there's a lot of that in this movie. This movie came out in 2011, starring Sharni Vincent, Nicholas Tucci, Wendy Glenn, A.J. Bowen, Joe Swanberg, Margaret Levy, and sorry, Amy Simowitz, T.I. West, Rob Moran, and Barbara Crampton. It's okay if you've never heard.

Darius: Of any of these people. I was going to say, be inspired.

Jordan: If you've never, like, don't be like, who are these? As you were reading them, I was like, no one knows who these people are. Yeah, it's just a bunch of white people in this movie. So this movie is about where a film reunion at a remote mansion is violently interrupted by mass killers. As the family is systematically attacked, one young guest reveals an unexpected and extraordinary set of survival skills, turning the home invasion scenario into a desperate fight for her life. So I'll toss it to you for act one.

Darius: Act one, a tense reunion. A wealthy, dysfunctional family gathers at their remote vacation home in rural Missouri for a celebratory weekend. Long simmering family tensions and arguments quickly surface at the dinner table, setting an uncomfortable mood just before their evening is violently shattered by an unexpected external threat. We started the movie with what might be the most pointless sex scene in cinema history.

Jordan: I had no point in serving no purpose.

Darius: I've never seen a sex scene serve less purpose. I tried to think of 1 and I was like, no, this is the most pointless sex scene.

Jordan: Literally. They could have been ******* reading a book together and it would have been just as effective of an opening.

Darius: That whole scene meant nothing. And then they just threw a sex scene in there. And it just was like, I've never, again, I thought long and hard. I cannot think of a more pointless sex scene.

Jordan: I feel like they just wanted to show ******* in this movie. I think that's.

Darius: Right, correct. It was just the last 30 seconds randomly.

Jordan: It was super like loveless. Like it was just.

Darius: It was. Well, to be honest, it's like a cult classic. Apparently.

Jordan: Yeah, it is. Yes, I Google that. I found that out too. Yeah.

Darius: But no, that's my first observation is. Giving it gold medal Olympic Award for the most pointless sex scene in all of movies.

Jordan: Correct.

Darius: What you got for act one?

Jordan: I agree. What do I have for act one? It's funny to me that so this movie obviously is just this. It's supposed to be like a rich family, but the movie is so low budget that they couldn't afford to make the family look rich.

Darius: The house was nice, but you could tell it wasn't filmed in the house from the outside. Right, exactly. They just went and got random drone footage of rich people's houses.

Jordan: They just like shot from outside. It was like, okay, cool.

Darius: Let's go into set now. The budget was $1 million.

Jordan: Yeah, I saw that. Yep. And it made like 65 million, I think.

Darius: Yeah, I mean, it came up. I went and saw it in the theaters. So, but the budget was literally one single $1,000,000.

Jordan: Yes. And it was literally all on the stunts and special effects.

Darius: Yeah.

Jordan: Because, because the acting they got for free. Oh, okay. That's my question. And you get, and you get what you pay for.

Darius: There's a reason why you ain't seen none of these anything else?

Jordan: Correct.

Darius: Yes. The argument, the argument was like, oh my God, no. Are you sleeping with her?

Jordan: No. It's just stupid. Like, like even like, there's like the scene where the sun Scares the dad by accident. And I was like, is he just creepy or is he a bad actor? I couldn't tell. I still don't know. I watched the movie twice. I still don't know.

Darius: That's a point of contention was the acting bad or was the ad back or was the acting bad or wasn't bad acting part of the bit part of the it's almost like Napoleon Dynamite where he the bad acting was part of the joke. I can't tell, which leads me to believe that the joke didn't land.

Jordan: Yeah, I think, yeah, because I was like, are they supposed to be showing like that they're ****** at being villains or are they just ****** actors? Because like the one son, he's supposed to be like a non-assuming guy, but he has this like creepy smile, random moments in the, like it's just, he's like, hey dad.

Darius: Like what? First, there's like the most unsexy come on ever when the older brother with his wife in the bathroom.

Jordan: And she's like brushing her teeth and he just starts taking her bra off.

Darius: Like with the coldest hands. Like I could feel how cold his hands were from ******* my couch. Like dude, you gotta be a little bit, first of all, y'all just got like.

Jordan: I just drove however many hours from whatever city you live in.

Darius: You meet your granny's in the next room. Like, you know, listen, ***** strikes are ***** strikes. So I'm not here to cast judgment, but a little bit more finesse.

Jordan: Correct.

Darius: And he walks away and he's like, God, you like it? So all right.

Jordan: So you don't *** ****. You need a pill. I don't know. Okay.

Darius: So he just let. So okay. They were looking, what did, why did he send old girl? Long story, they sent his girlfriend who he barely knows to the neighbor's house in the middle of nowhere by herself.

Jordan: That was crazy.

Darius: You know, don't send your girl in the middle of the woods alone. Don't do that. I think we need to announce that, but don't do that.

Jordan: Yes. A lot of this movie goes back to something we talked about earlier where certain movies only work if the characters are all really stupid.

Darius: Yes.

Jordan: In this movie is a testament to that. I did like the misdirection, I will say, because when I first the first opening scene where they killed whoever the bad guy is, as we know him at that point is they kill the student with the old professor or whatever. And I thought it was like one of those like, you know, in horror movies, there's like certain rules and **** like that. Like I thought it was like the I'm going to punish like the horror type thing, you know, like some religious **** or something. And then when the son drives in with the girlfriend, the British or Australian girl, and she's like, your dad's rich, like, whatever. And he's like, I hope you don't have a problem with fascists. Then I thought it was going to be like an eat the rich slasher.

Darius: Yeah. One lazy exposition. How would she just like?

Jordan: You just you Googled it your dad.

Darius: She's basically in the audience and she's asking questions we would ask. And I know I said in a previous preview that you're supposed to use the B plot to sort of explain things to people. It's not supposed to be that heavy-handed. It's like, that's the art of writing. You're supposed to, you know, the subtlety of it. Yeah, so. Yeah, I mean, what you got fragged? What?

Jordan: I think that the movie didn't. I knew earlier that the people were stupid when there was just a mom and dad in the house and someone's upstairs and you hear that you see the chandelier like rattle or whatever. She's like, honey, there's someone in the house. And he's like, okay, well, you just go outside and I'll go just by myself. Horrible 101. You never, ever, ever split up.

Darius: No, I mean, in any sort of survival situation, splitting up is just, it's rarely worth it unless one person is injured and you need to go for help. But like, there's power in numbers and it's just hard to kill two people versus one. And Especially too, as we get late, my observation in act 2, once the chaos breaks out, is just the one I have for all of these horror movies. So I'll just save that one.

Jordan: Yeah.

Darius: We got anything else for act one?

Jordan: Yeah, that's really ****. I mean, act one is pretty, yeah, act one is pretty nondescript. It's really act two and three where the movie kind of hits some sort of stride.

Darius: My favorite part of scary movies actually is before the **** breaks loose. So I always enjoy act one. the scene setting, like when I watch The Strangers, I like it. I just like to see, that's honestly, I've watched this movie a lot, but I almost always stop around Act 2 because it's just like, all right, this is just, you know, whatever scary movie it was. But Act 2, Chaos and Counterattack. As mass assailants besiege the isolated house, the terrified family scrambles to find a way to survive. Amidst the carnage, one unlikely guest with a surprising background takes charge, revealing A remarkable resourcefulness and shifting the balance of power in this desperate confrontation. As I said earlier, this is all these movies are premised on no one having guns in America. Correct.

Jordan: So you have a cabin in the woods with ****** cell service and you didn't think to bring it in a gun?

Darius: In Missouri. they're in Missouri.

Jordan: I didn't even realize that.

Darius: It's yeah, like the bad guys don't have guns, which would have made their jobs a million times easier. They got bow and arrows.

Jordan: They're using crossbows and axes and hatchets.

Darius: For no reason other than to keep the plot going.

Jordan: This movie should have been set in like 1850. That would have that would have made that would have made it make much more sense.

Darius: Why doesn't anyone ever have guns in these movies? Like it's just. Especially because in spoiler alert, you're watching. So it was one thing in like the strangers because there was almost like a, it was almost a ritualistic killing. Right. It was like almost like a almost sexual. Some of these movies like this, the stabbing and the hunt and the chase was part of it. This is the contract killing. Why are you doing a contract killing the hard way?

Jordan: By the way, we learned later on in the movie that the guys that they hired to kill people were in the military. What the **** are you doing with the crossbow?

Darius: No, it just doesn't make sense. Like you said, this is some Game of Thrones weaponry. And again, if you're a part of some ritual like other movies have or some supernatural thing, all right, cool.

Jordan: Yeah. Like, have you ever seen like The Invitation?

Darius: No, I have not. No.

Jordan: Really good one.

Darius: But like it's like you're doing a home evasion with crossbows in the year 2011. All right. Also, when people are shooting things through the window, you should get away from the window.

Jordan: Duck. And also don't turn your back on the window.

Darius: No, I stalled the first guy out who got shot in the shoulder because that was chaos.

Jordan: He was grabbing his mom. Yeah.

Darius: That was chaos. But like it kept walking towards window.

Jordan: They just and they just by the way, they just kept standing up. I was like, what do you, honestly, that kitchen, the dining room murder scene, after the first guy got killed, I just laughed the entire time because it just was so screaming.

Darius: The screaming. Oh my God. The bad acting screaming. Like she's just. Correct. She's just like doing nothing.

Jordan: By the way, no tears were falling from her eyes, by the way.

Darius: It just, and they like, dude, turn her mic down. She's, I can't hear anything else. Please.

Jordan: Yeah. that that scene was pretty funny I will say I did like the dinner scene before that happened like the argument before that because that brother was a ******* ******** like yeah if anyone in the movie deserved what happened to him he kind of deserved it he was he was a ***** ** **** and you could tell he gave his siblings hell throughout their whole lives but yeah I'll be honest with you even though that since this weekend in misdirection I thought the girlfriend was the internet first the British girl the Australian girl She was just way too calm. And how do you know how to do all this ****? Like, I was like, something's weird about you.

Darius: Know, I think, yeah, I didn't think she was in it. I definitely thought one of the brothers were. And the one it ended up being, you know, we'll tell you an act three could not have been the. I mean, that might be the.

Jordan: He was so obvious.

Darius: Yes. And his girlfriend was just like, literally just like a bad guy.

Jordan: Yeah, by the way, that's right. That's I thought about it too. Cause like, When they met his mom outside, like she's like smoking a cigarette. She didn't say hello. She didn't shake her hand. Like it was just really weird. And also like he just was, he didn't like his siblings were dying all around him and he never cried once. Like that was weird.

Darius: Also, man, all these new partners, girlfriends, whatever, boyfriends, meeting like in the middle of nowhere. Like can we like meet at an Applebee's? Can I meet your parents at an Applebee's first? Why I gotta spend a week in the middle of the ******* woods with them for the first time I'm eating them.

Jordan: No, never, ever, ever.

Darius: Can we pop into a Chili's and get some chicken crispers? And first, you know, let's do a cabinet in the woods once we know each other.

Jordan: Right. Yeah, you say that for like holidays and ****. You're supposed to just go and, you know, have a happy hour.

Darius: Then proceeds so they get Arrows are flying, chaos is the best. They get to the foyer.

Jordan: Oh, yes, this is my favorite part.

Darius: And they're like, we need to run out.

Jordan: It was so dumb.

Darius: And they're like, you ran track. And they proceed to concoct the dumbest thing I've ever seen in my life.

Jordan: Yes. So for the viewers, there's a big double door to open the door into the massive mansion that they live in. So the dad and one of the sons opens the door and she's supposed to sprint out to run for help.

Darius: His youngest daughter, their youngest sister, that's who they sent out into the murderous woods.

Jordan: Yes, right. And she's supposed to, Jesse Owens her way to safety.

Darius: And she literally, in a very cinematic way, starts sprinting in a straight line.

Jordan: Barefoot.

Darius: Barefoot out into the woods. I don't know where plan was.

Jordan: Plan was.

Darius: Why they're bringing so much attention. Wouldn't you want to sneak? And then she runs right to her death. Apparently there's a trip wire.

Jordan: Yeah. And Danner decapitated her. That didn't make sense either because she wasn't running fast enough to even.

Darius: You can't generate that much force. No, I thought when I first saw.

Jordan: It, I thought she got, I thought they shot a gun and it like grazed her throat.

Darius: She almost decapitated herself by running 10 mph into a string.

Jordan: Yes.

Darius: I mean, it wouldn't feel good. It hurt. You probably break some skin, but you would not instantly die. And she just runs and they open the doors and she just and that was it.

Jordan: By the way, if the gunman or assailant is outside with the crossbow in front of the house, you think her jogging out was going to shock him? He has a weapon. She doesn't. Why would he be afraid?

Darius: Why are you? Why is one person doing? Why does anyone have to stay in this house? I don't like I'm confused by all of this. Like why don't y'all just leave together for help? Like there's nothing No one had cars. There's no cars outside that we can get to.

Jordan: Yeah, where did y'all park? They're like, yeah, we can't get to the cars.

Darius: The cars just disappeared. Like everyone forgot they drove.

Jordan: Yeah, by the way, so my strategy would be we're either all living together or we're all staying in the house. And if you're all staying in the house, you need to all sit in the foyer where there's no windows and just ******* huddle up and just make some **** shake.

Darius: Grab some knives, boil some water, grab, there's a bat somewhere in here, some wood. No survival skills. No one, well, old girl went and got some weapons, but.

Jordan: Yeah, we're not, no one's going to any room alone. We're all going all together everywhere.

Darius: Mom has a panic attack. They send her upstairs alone and lay her and lay her in bed by herself.

Jordan: To do what?

Darius: I don't know.

Jordan: Right. After her daughter just got her head blown off.

Darius: And so they're like, here's the value, take a nap. And we're gonna, we're gonna go downstairs and watch a movie, I guess. I don't.

Jordan: Right. She couldn't sleep next to y'all where she would be safe.

Darius: I just sit there, I'm home alone and like, I will be right back, you know, sleeping off.

Jordan: Just take a nap, sleep off for the death of your child. What?

Darius: Oh, obviously mom dies because of course bad guy shows up, butchers her.

Jordan: He's under the bed. Yep.

Darius: Dad sees her freaks out. That's when we find out. That's what old girl just starts putting belt to *** like she was. Yeah, she stabbed one guy in the hand. She went and got knives.

Jordan: Yeah, she turned into Colombiana.

Darius: Never was explained. Well, I guess she kind of when she was making the knife, the nail death trap, she kind.

Jordan: Of said she grew up in a survivalist compound. And I don't know. I guess that's supposed to be a sufficient answer. I don't believe that, but.

Darius: And so she. I don't know. So the dad dies when the daughter and the son, like, what was the dad doing? He was like walking around by himself.

Jordan: He was. I don't know what he was doing. He basically figured out that it was an inside job or not inside job, but that the person in the house.

Darius: Yeah.

Jordan: Yeah. They've been to whoever had been squatting there. was obviously planning this the whole time. And he's about to tell them, and then dude comes behind him and slits his throat.

Darius: And then we get the bad acting where, well, I guess that's getting attacked. Are you gonna get there?

Jordan: Yeah, **** it. Yeah. I'm still tripping off. She thought she was gonna outrun a crossbow. But yeah, let's go.

Darius: She thought she was gonna outrun a crossbow by making a big production of running out by herself to where I don't know. Everyone forgot they had cars.

Jordan: Right.

Darius: I really just, again, like you said, the plot is premised on everyone being the dumbest ************* you've ever met. And so the plot continues. Act 3, the final stand, the dwindling number of survivors engages in a brutal drawn out battle for survival. That's A poorly read sentence. I guess the relentless intruders, booby traps and close quarters combat turn the house into a deadly gauntlet as the heroine fights to make it to mourning alive. What are the odds you playing all this and your brother's girlfriend happens to be female John Wick? Right. Yeah.

Jordan: What are the chances of that?

Darius: Because like, yeah, he's, we, I mean, spoiler, we find out that her boyfriend or whatever was in on it at the end.

Jordan: Yeah, two of the sons are in on it.

Darius: But like, they had just met. So it's entirely possible he didn't know that she was just damn skilled. Like, why would you ever bring that up? You know? Yeah. And so this ****** luck, you know, the girl your brother's ******* just happens to be a *******.

Jordan: Yeah.

Darius: What's the old girl from? What's the Avenger girl? Scarlett? Scarlett.

Jordan: Black Widow.

Darius: Black Widow. Yeah. She just without guns because apparently it's 1776.

Jordan: Right.

Darius: What you got for Act 3?

Jordan: Yeah. So I think for me that act three was what I thought most back through was. I feel like their inheritance wasn't enough of motivation for them to do all of that. Like, I get hating your brother. He was * ****. But like, your parents were nice to you.

Darius: Die already. This is hard.

Jordan: Just just die. Like, like it took eight screwdrivers to the chest to kill your brother. Really.

Darius: Well, that's one thing that movies get wrong is just how hard it is to stab someone to death. That that was true. Like, it's actually. It's incredibly difficult to stab someone to death.

Jordan: Yeah.

Darius: So how many people have the stab? Well, I mean, just in general, like two things movies get weird is like non-fatal gunshot wounds are way more dangerous than movies that let you believe. And stabbing, stabbing in like in movies when you like strangle someone with the pillow, it's basically possible. But yeah, so he's just like stabbing his brother And his brother is isn't dying yet. And he just like throws a temper tantrum like the sword die.

Jordan: I just didn't get it because like for one of the movie didn't do a great job of showing how much money the parents had, mostly because the budget was so low, I guess. But also like your parents weren't old. So the fact you even think about your inheritance was kind of weird to me. And like, why why kill your sisters too? Like they just It wasn't enough of an explanation for me.

Darius: My understanding is...

Jordan: The young kids seem like a ****** ** but.

Darius: They wanted to seem like a random home massacre because anything else they would look at the people inheriting all that money as to why, you know, these relatively you know, good shape, not old, but not elder. Like it's not, they were like, what, early 60s? Like they have, they look like they could live a long life after that. Just, you know, got, just died. So.

Jordan: Yeah.

Darius: And that's why he brought her along so she can be the non-interested party that witnessed it. Like she's not, if the only survivors are people that stand to gain a bunch of money, you know, but they would have kept her alive if she was you know was willing to you know not yeah to John Wick so what you got fract three man.

Jordan: Um oh so I had to wait until we talked about the spoiler of the twist here but um so when the son was behind the dad in fact one when he was in the house do you think that was when he was supposed to kill him but he just chickened out?

Darius: Yeah I think so um yeah I think so because The son that left, we're talking about the dude who left, but the Australian girl's boyfriend, right? Yeah. He calls his brother and giant female John Wick picks up the phone and she doesn't say anything. And he's just like, I'm sorry, I checked it out. I left. I couldn't go through with it. So I think, yeah, that was all part of the plan. Though I hesitate to give this writer much credit. You know, as far as like, yeah, next level plot devices and writing. but yeah to answer your question I believe so.

Jordan: Yeah when did you not say when did you know because I feel like we all kind of learned it around the same time but like did you thinking back and looking back on that were there did you see anything that you missed in terms of like clues about who was involved?

Darius: It's hard to tell the clues from God awful acting so that is true that is true I thought it was very obvious because I've seen it it's very obvious who the killers were But only because no one, I mean, this was some bad acting, man. Like they were.

Jordan: Yo, dog, it was horrible.

Darius: They might as well have been holding the pieces of paper with their lines on it, like on the set.

Jordan: Yeah. They should have just had the prop guy with the cue cards like that.

Darius: I've seen better acting at like high school plays.

Jordan: No, really.

Darius: They were horrible.

Jordan: Every last one of them.

Darius: But in a weird way, I enjoyed this movie. I'll be honest.

Jordan: Yeah, it actually is pretty fun.

Darius: I got a good serious laugh out loud when the girl, the killer girl and the killer dude were laying next to his mom's dead body.

Jordan: Yeah.

Darius: Like, you'd never want to do anything exciting. And he's like, really?

Jordan: No, seriously. Yeah. Like, I actually was crazy.

Darius: I actually, he was.

Jordan: A villain and I did hate him, but I was like, yeah, you got to, you tripping on that one. He just killed his whole family.

Darius: Like, never do anything exciting. He's like, I'm just murdering my whole house here. Like, what are you talking about? Right. Exciting enough for you?

Jordan: On the first link, by the way.

Darius: Yeah. You know, I'm gonna make you rich and I'm killing everybody in front of you, but you know.

Jordan: Yeah.

Darius: Looking in front of my dead mom's corpse is a bridge too far. That is where I draw the line.

Jordan: Yeah, that's it. That's my, yeah, that was crazy. I was like, is she serious right now? Where the **** did he meet her?

Darius: What a stupid movie.

Jordan: It is so dumb. But most Halloween movies are dumb.

Darius: I enjoy it though. I enjoy it though.

Jordan: It is fun. It's fun though. It's fun. That's kind of, yeah, it's good fun.

Darius: Do you have anything else for actor?

Jordan: Yeah. So the clues that I caught looking back and I just like reflecting was when the younger brother, everybody's freaking out in the foyer and they couldn't didn't get self-service. And he's like, they jammed it. They probably jammed it. You can buy my life for 30 bucks.

Darius: And his brother, which I wrote his back, is like, you ******* nerd.

Jordan: ******* low life. You low life.

Darius: That was funny. I laughed.

Jordan: Yeah, that was that was a kind of a dead giveaway right there.

Darius: Almost two of those. But it's funny because it is. It is sort of realistic in that situation. The older brother would be like, why do you know that, you ******* low life?

Jordan: No, seriously, yeah.

Darius: Because I can see in that situation, you just be like, wait, what the ****?

Jordan: No, because what the **** do you mean? Yeah, I think another thing I did like though was that they killed, not like, but it was smart of them to kill the neighbors first because that would have been the first line of defense in terms of you're going to go there for help.

Darius: And it makes it feel a lot more random than just.

Jordan: It makes it random. So it looks like you're just killing rich people.

Darius: That makes sense. That was all I had. You have anything else?

Jordan: Yeah, that's pretty much all I got for this one.

Darius: What do you rate it?

Jordan: In terms of I'm going to give this one 2 1/2 stars, which is like 5 stars considering how ****** the actors are in this movie.

Darius: I'm going for it, man. I love this movie. It's stupid as hell. The acting is terrible. I've probably seen it 12 times.

Jordan: Yeah.

Darius: It's just.

Jordan: Yeah, I might watch it again this week. It actually is kind of fun.

Darius: It's I love a good stupid slasher and the first I love this setup, the bad acting. And yeah, for a four. I'm grading it on a curve because it's a Halloween movie. But no, this is not this is not great cinema, but it doesn't always have to be that way. So I'm giving it a four.

Jordan: That is true. Yeah. I just had to. We just can't undersell to the audience, guys, how bad these actors are in this movie.

Darius: There's a reason it was. The movie is 15 years old. You haven't seen any of these people ever since.

Jordan: Yeah, we actually should not have even mentioned their names in this episode.

Darius: Because I don't remember their characters names.

Jordan: I don't either. Not at all.

Darius: Right. Thanks for listening. My name is Darius. That's these all up in the area on all socials.

Jordan: And I'm Jordan. That's Jordan to be riding on all socials.
