JordanWelcome back to Out the Trunk with Jordan and Darius. My name is Jordan. That's Jordan to be riding on all socials.
DariusAnd I'm Darius. That's these all up in the area on all socials. And.
JordanToday we're going to be talking whiplash. This movie came out in 2014. Let's get into it.
DariusAll right, I wasn't excused that being that fast. Act one, the invitation. A driven first-year drummer enters a prestigious music school and catches the attention of a demanding conductor whose approval could change everything if the opportunity is worth the cost. Just going to start off with a real quick question. Is Miles Teller still with us? Where is he at?
JordanYeah, I thought the same thing because he was so ******* good in this movie. He's a really, really good actor. And I feel like I haven't seen anything in a long, actually, he was in the Michael Jackson movie for a little bit. He played the label exec who got him free from his dad. I think he's supposed to be in something coming up soon. Let me see if I can find it. Cause yeah, he's dope as ****. He's in like, he's in a lot of movies that I love.
DariusMy overarching point though is that he should just be there. What happened to like?
JordanHe really, really should be.
DariusHe trolls in movies where he has 10 lines is not where we thought this was going 10 years ago.
JordanNo, for sure. I thought he was going to be like. up there with Chalamet and Austin Butler and whoever else.
DariusI am, Pattinson, we forget that these are people and they have personal things and, maybe you just had something happen. I don't want to speculate, but, these are not avatars that we can just move on. Like sometimes people just don't want to, things happen. My point is, everybody with superstar potential doesn't have it realized, so But he is phenomenal in this. And I was when I first saw this, I thought we'd see a lot more of them.
JordanMe too. Me too. I thought because he was in the Divergent series. He was really, really good in that. Loved him in that awkward moment. I really thought he was kind of on the way out of here, you know?
DariusTwo night stand with the. Yeah, I was. He was great in that.
JordanYeah, I think it was Anna Kendrick was in that movie.
DariusShe. They have changed their name since then, so I don't actually know what the new name is.
JordanOh, was it the actor from The Odyssey that played?
DariusNo, but similar situation. Okay, gotcha.
JordanOkay.
DariusSo.
JordanYeah. I love that movie too. He did The Spectacular Now with Shailene Woodley. That one was really good.
DariusFantastic for I'm sure he wants to forget about.
JordanYeah, we all forgot about that movie.
DariusDidn't they try it again with the... Anyways, let's get back on track. What else you got back on, man?
JordanI want to say that if you have a dark, exquisite sense of humor, this is the movie for you. Because this movie, I think this movie is absolutely hilarious. I don't know if it's supposed to be funny, but JK Simmons was absolutely hilarious and terrifying in this movie. Like the one liners he has, I don't know how he got through those readings. Honestly, I'd have been like cracking up.
DariusHe won an Academy Award for this, right?
JordanYeah, he won an Oscar for this.
DariusYeah, he deserved it. He was absolutely menacing, to say the least, but he definitely had some, we'll call it sophomoric homophobic humor.
JordanYeah. No, he was just.
DariusUsing old school inappropriate insults to convey a lack of masculinity. So, The movie did the thing where they're just like, oh, we don't have any women. Let's just give him a pointless girlfriend B plot arc that like, why?
JordanYeah.
DariusI'm not a woman, but like, I imagine women watch that and I was like, just do nothing.
JordanRight. Yeah. Because it just gets me insulting. It's like, to me, it's almost like, people say like friends was racist because there was no black people.
DariusYeah.
JordanI'd rather there be no black people than them be a token or the disposable love interest or the black best friend or the, you know what I mean?
DariusYeah, just like, you know, just you have someone in there like making hip hop jokes. It's just like, no. Right. Especially during the 90s, we had our fill of any kind of show we wanted. That's their business over there. I wasn't watching that **** no way. So I was we had we had living single. We had Martin. We had Wayne Brothers.
JordanMartin Fresh Prince.
DariusFresh Prince. Yeah. Smart guy. Sister.
JordanLiving single.
DariusWhatever you wanted. There was something for you.
JordanYeah. They could have Jackson. We had everything. Yeah, literally.
DariusYou know, so get rid of the like, don't do the pointless girlfriend B plot. She was literally just an empty plot. Yeah. There's just nothing.
JordanYeah.
DariusSo right.
JordanShe's just a vehicle for his obsession. Yeah, I love the way they introduced JK Simmons' character as like a spectral figure, like where he's like behind the door listening on the first day of class and everyone's like, oh **** he's listening. And then when he walked away, they're like, oh, we suck.
DariusYou think of his humor, man, when he walks into the, we'll call it like junior varsity, or that's a better word. I don't know what it's called. Yeah. And he, you know, totally takes over that guy's class. He's like, going to, nope, nope, to see if you're here for it because you're pretty, nope. No, you are. But he knew the dude on the drums. Miles Teller's character was him. And you could tell. Yeah, that was like immediate because he's a genius. He's a genius conductor and right. He could spot the talent from a mile away. And so I thought that was really cool how it was. There's a lot of game recognized game in that in that exchange, even though, like, he's hard. Yeah. But. He was hard on him, but the other people he was just dismissive about. Right. Because he didn't give a ****. Yeah. And we're talking about people who got into this, you know, prestigious school. So even on junior varsity, you still good. And you know, so he just he knew he was him. So what else you got?
JordanYeah, I like that. I like that, too. One of my favorites is when he sees him the night before, when he's practicing up late by himself and he's he's like, Oh, I'm sorry. He said, Why did you stop playing? Would you think I came? You're here to play music? What are you doing? And then he's like, and he started playing. He's like, did I ask you to be a monkey?
DariusBut he was there practicing alone after everybody else went home.
JordanAnd so after everybody else went home, yeah, he was he was he was with him shooting in the gym.
DariusAnd you notice he was the only conductor still there. And so we never like the movie never actually shows how dedicated to it JK Simmons is in like explicit terms. But there's subtle nods to it, like the fact that he's there late all the time or the fact that literally at 9am on the dot he walks in. That's the precision of someone who has mastered, you know, who knows his tempo. Routine.
JordanYes, he was not rushing nor dragging.
DariusHe walked in when that second hit the dot. And I like that the movie didn't do a scene showing his obsession. It just was subtle about it. And so Spoiler alert, this is, I enjoyed how well crafted this was. Spoiler my rating.
JordanThis is literally, literally a beautiful film. The way it's shot, the cinematography, the lighting, the shading, the color grade, the storytelling, the acting, the music is great. And I'm not a big jazz person. I'm for the blues. But as a former band kid, this movie was ******* phenomenal. Luckily, I never had a professor act like a conductor act like that. Granted, we were 12, so he probably would have gotten fired pretty quick. But it is a realistic portrayal of, you know, conductors. They do do they go hard as **** you know, for their craft. One of my favorite scenes is where he says, be there at 6 a.m. first day for core practice. And first of all, he's late. He wakes up at 603. So you already ****** ** for one. And he gets there and he waits for three hours before everyone else gets there. I almost wonder if he had been on time, if the professor would have been there waiting for him.
DariusThat's a good question that I don't have a good answer to. But I will say that I'm more sympathetic to the drive for excellence. Than multiple who watch this movie, but that's just * **** **** telling someone to show up three hours early.
JordanNo, **** *** bro. Yeah, for real.
DariusThat accomplishes nothing. It's just to be a controlling ********.
JordanCorrect, because there is a lot of that in this movie too. There is, there is, I'm pushing you because I know you can do better, but there's also a whole lot of, I'm just doing this because I can, and you can't stop me. What I was going to say. Oh, and also even he wasted the three hours. I would have been practicing. by yourself. You might as well. You're playing with basically seniors in this upper echelon of orchestra. You kind of wasted your time too.
DariusI imagine he was nervous as **** because he doesn't know it. Like he gets there late. Yeah. And so he doesn't know if they left, if whatever. So he just kind of sitting there waiting on his, you know, punishment until people start filing it and he realized he was played. Let me ask you this though.
JordanYeah.
DariusWas it so I don't believe that he stole the, so when they go to play this event and he's an alternate and the core guy loses his sheet notes. Yeah. And I don't believe that like Miles Teller's character stole it, but I do believe, was it snake **** to admit you could play it by heart.
JordanNo, because you should be able to play it by heart. You're a senior doing this ****. What do you mean you don't know the ******* notes?
DariusI agree and that's why I love this movie because Miles Teller's character was just as competitive and just loved as much of this as everybody else.
JordanAnd that's what I loved about it.
DariusWas just as cutthroat and seemingly enjoyed the aggressive instruction. He didn't, you don't see him cower too many times.
JordanNo, And it's just like. After that first day, no.
DariusHe's just like, I'm going to match your psychopath.
JordanYes, they match each other's freaks.
DariusHe is just like, no, I can play it by heart. Get this rookie up out of here. And he smokes it.
JordanAnd first of all, yeah, first of all, you're really my op because we're in competition right now. He talked to him crazy that whole time that he was his understudy. And Why did you give me your notebook? That is, that's your responsibility. Also, why the **** don't you know that your ******* notes?
DariusWell, I mean, it just, it would have been very easy for them to make this. It was a realistic portrayal of this world. This world is very cutthroat.
JordanYeah.
DariusYou know, it's a dog eat dog world. There's only one chord chair for drummer. Like you could have 4 trumpets, but there's only one drummer. Right. You know, there's only one drummer. And the drummer stands out. Generally speaking, the drummer gets famous. He's the quarterback. And so It would have been very easy for the people making this movie to make it very happy and we get it along and oh no, but it portrayed the cutthroat nature of the industry in an accurate way.
JordanCorrect. I also, I mean, I think we probably all agree. The professor took that notebook, right? We all think that.
DariusYeah, I would. I think he wanted a pretext to fire the core and bring the ultimate.
JordanTanner, yeah.
DariusEddie, you know, He's a dictator, but even dictators have to have allies. And so you need a pretext to remove a core member for a rookie that doesn't **** *** the rest of the band. And so having him admit that he doesn't know his bars, his lyrics, the rest of the band is like, okay, get him the **** ** out of here. We need professionals. So I believe he stole that for sure.
JordanYeah, it even it's like that scene where he's like, someone's out of tune here. And he tells the one kid, get out. And he's like, he should have known it was you. But he should have known. And that's just as bad.
DariusYeah. He just, you know, we'll get to it in later segments. But like, you know, there is excellence has its costs, you know, and we'll get to that a little bit later. Do you have anything else for Aquan?
JordanYeah. So the first date he has with the NPC girlfriend. I did like that scene though, because it showed like the different communication styles between men and women, where he's like, she's talking about, she goes to Ford, he's like, oh, what are you studying? She's like, I'm undecided. He's like, oh, what do you want to do? She's like, I don't know. And then he's like, what do you want to do? She's like, I don't know. And he's just, she gets, you can tell she gets frustrated, because I think she, no one wants to be, wants to say they don't know what they want to do with their life, But he was genuinely interested in her life and was asking questions because he was genuinely interested in her. And it's kind of funny because there's that whole thing on the internet you see where people are like, oh, guys never ask me questions about myself. And it's like, here's a guy who's asking questions. He was kind of met with a prickly response.
DariusSo yes, I get it. But to defend the women for a bit, When they ask, when they say guys never ask them questions about themselves, I often listen to men talk to women and yeah, they just, they did just, it's just a monologue most of the time.
JordanYeah, I believe that.
DariusIt's like they'll ask a question and it's just like, you know, it's just, it's a valid complaint that often men are just, you know, speaking and not really conversing.
JordanYeah, that's very true. You can tell when a guy, it just has the monologue written in his head like a teleprompter and he's just waiting for you to shut up.
DariusYeah, it's just like what they're saying is not input at all. It's just, you know, you have you have the script and you're just spitting it out. And she's just her words are just a speed bump to the end of your script.
JordanYeah.
DariusWant to get an act to? Act to the pressure. Practice becomes obsession as the drummer pushes past comfort, relationships, and confidence while trying to survive a competitive room ruled by fear, precision, and impossible expectations. And let me just say, you know, generally speaking, I've come to believe that school just should be harder. Like we've gotten a little too lax as far as like grading and passing kids and accommodations and da, da, da, da, da. This is ridiculous. Why are you throwing things?
JordanNo, that's because you'd had to fight me, dog. I'm sorry.
DariusWell, I do fight. Like you said, he matches freak because they got to fight.
JordanYou think you go throw a chair at me and survive?
DariusJust. I don't like men who cannot keep their composure. Right. And so, like. you can be angry but just losing your composure and throwing things is just you're not in control and that's not leadership you know?
JordanSo no not at all that's that's abuse of power and abuse of people yeah so okay so they do a good job in this movie of showing why Miles Teller his character is the way he is you know like why he delved why he just loves music so much is He didn't feel seen at home. Like when he goes back home for that weekend dinner with his family and they're just ignoring everything he says, you know, they're like, I mean, okay, your drumming is cool, but like Bobby got a touchdown and you just got a teacher of the year award and whatever. That's one of my favorite scenes in the movie, that dinner scene where he's just like **** talking to his brother. Like you're never going to the league.
DariusYeah. I'll be honest. That's the scene when I went and swapped my laundry out. I was like, okay.
JordanOh, really? I love that scene.
DariusI thought it was just filler where they're just like, okay, like there's two characters in this movie and they're not on the scene at the same time in this one. So it was it was it definitely showed because it's funny because he's the excellent one right of the of the family. Like he's a he's a striver and the achiever. It's just not in a I was going to say not in a traditionally masculine way, but playing drums is pretty dope, it's not like he's playing a flute, and.
JordanI think maybe because it was a jazz drum.
DariusYeah, but I mean, I don't know. I thought it was pretty like, well, the skills translate, you know, like he can do, he can play more than one of the other music.
JordanSo I think it's one of those things where, because I'm guessing because his brother was a football player, that's considered very masculine, obviously. And then you're an arts kid. they probably placed a higher premium on the you know the athlete over the the musician.
DariusYeah that's true that is probably true um what else you got Frank too?
JordanUm let's see oh so okay so what did you think about the breakup scene?
DariusUh the with the NPC I didn't think much about it at all uh what did you think about it?
JordanWell, I feel like that was the one scene where he he I don't want to phrase this where he overly succumbed to the of his teacher, where he's like, I'm just going to be an ******* to you because that means that I'm great, you know, was like, you could have just said, hey, I don't think I'm going to have the time to give you what I think you want or need. We should see other people call it a day. And he kind of went on a full reign about how she would ruin his life and he's better than her. She's just normal and she doesn't get it.
DariusBut that would betray the character though, right? Like he's an obsessive. He is a psychopath. It doesn't make sense for him to handle a breakup gently. And nor did it make sense for him to even have a girlfriend at all.
JordanWell, that too.
DariusYou know, his soulmate was damn conductor Fletcher.
JordanAnd.
DariusSo They were married at that point. And so I don't think I think it would have betrayed his character if he was gentle in breaking up with her.
JordanThat's a good point. I didn't think of that. I say. Oh, so the there's a scene where he's auditioning for the role again with the other kid from his freshman class. No, all three of them. They're auditioning against each other. And he's screaming at him and he's I think that was the scene. Was that scene through the chair? I can't remember.
DariusAll the yelling. He threw a lot.
JordanYeah, he threw a lot of **** in this movie. Did you think he had the part the entire time and Fletcher was just testing him?
DariusYes, I don't. I think Fletcher knew. It's a bit of movie magic that Fletcher wouldn't have heard him play before. But right from the moment he heard him play, he saw it. You know, I don't think I think someone someone's ear as good as Fletcher's just knew and like the so you see it in like we're jumping a little bit ahead like the the scene before the car crash right right he shows up late and Fletcher is like you can't play and he's like yes I am and no one else would even get another opportunity Fletcher Fletcher would have been like get the **** out of here.
JordanGet the **** out of here Fletcher was.
DariusLike what is it trying to find a way to get to yes that's what he was doing yeah it's just like yeah well you go get him now and if you're one minute late 5 minutes late 10 minutes late 10
Jordanminutes late and also and because he wasn't he was the only one he ever let speak back to him yeah like I don't think he would have ever let anyone else argue back and forth with him like that no he was he.
DariusHe knew it. He knew he was him. And he couldn't give that away because he wanted to keep him focused. But the way he was always looking for yes, I don't think it was ever a competition. I think it was his job from the moment his ears perked up when he walked past that room or when he walked in that room and had him play.
JordanYeah, I think so too. Also, it's kind of interesting watching this movie because the first time I saw it come out in 2014. I think I saw it probably that same year. So I would have been 22, I think, around the same age as a character. And I was like, this professor is * ****. Like, he's just ruining this guy's life and whatever, and then, watching it now, though, it's as a full adult, it's like he really did believe in him and he really did want to see him do well. Did he take it overboard? Absolutely. Was he was he insane? Yeah. Should he have gotten his *** and curb stomp for show? But he did really believe in that kid. And he deserved it. Let me just say.
DariusYou're feeding down the highway 60 mph, you get T-boned. You don't just crawl out and walk.
JordanInto the floor with a concussion.
DariusHe's just like, oh. the car flips, he lands on his head, gets T-boned at 60 miles an hour. And he just like kicks himself out of the car and just like walks into there with like, and wobbles into the arena. He has like a 111 gash on his forehead. And I was like, you know, he, he would, he might survive that, but he ain't walking anytime soon.
JordanYou know, no, He got T-boned on the driver's side and it was speeding.
DariusNo, not at all. It was, Nine times out of 10, that's a fatality.
JordanSo, but I was going to say, let's be honest. Yeah, he wouldn't, she probably should have died.
DariusBut it was, it was, it was great cinema. And it gave him, it gave him, and he shows up and he ***** up and then they get to fight. And so.
JordanYeah.
DariusBleeding all over the drum set.
JordanDropping his sticks.
DariusYeah, just ****. Well, because he was half dead, you know, he was like.
JordanYeah, but I'll say he was his brain was bruised. Um, but just think about that, though, right?
DariusHow nice are you that you show up late bleeding out of your head? And he's just like, ready.
JordanAnd the two. My favorite scene is like when he, before he, he like, he's looking around looking for, uh, uh, Mouse Teller. Then he sees him. Then he sees the blood and he's like. And he's just, all right, **** it.
DariusI got to win.
JordanBy the way, by the way, how trash were the other drummers if he was was let a concussed human performing in a concert in a competition concert?
DariusSo I'm not big. I don't know instruments like that, but I imagine it's just like, right, like basketball where the hot, the top 10 players are so much better than the top 20 players. And it's like, right, you could be an all-star and be nowhere near an all-NBA player, you know, and I just think that, you know, maybe he was first team all-NBA and they were just like fringe all-stars, you know, it's.
JordanLike, yeah, when I say trash, I mean trash by comparison that I think I think he was like basically like young LeBron and then the other guys were like Danny Granger.
DariusSure. I was gonna say like The other dudes are like LaMelo Ball and he's like Shay. And it's like LaMelo Ball and 99% of the gyms he walks into is the best basketball player in that gym. But when he plays against Shay, he's like 10 times, like Shay's five times better than him. So it's just, you know, it gets lonely at the top. The peaks are high and you know, the last five miles of a mountain, the summit are the hardest five, you know. What else you got for act 2?
JordanThat's all I had for act 2. Although I did like that his main message to the kid they never said verbally was you need to be comfortable being uncomfortable like the second whenever he whenever he saw Miles Teller getting comfortable or getting like smiling too much on the drums and getting a little cocky or overconfident He's like, no, I gotta, I gotta let another fire under your *** now. So let me tell you, suck again. Let me embarrass someone in front of you so you stay on your ****.
DariusYou know, in a sick and twisted way, it's good leadership. Act 3, the reckoning, the relationship between student and teacher reaches his breaking point, fight we mentioned earlier, forcing both to confront whether greatness is earned through inspiration, cruelty, control, or something more complicated. This movie makes me miss Sea Grace. I know we just had a whole segment about downtowns.
JordanYeah.
DariusYou know, places that you could just pop in there, have two drinks, hear some good music and pop out. But I just start with my actual question. So obviously this is almost a caricature, right?
JordanRight.
DariusYou know, like he is. He's playing it up. But I do think. we lose something as a society when we stop chasing excellence and we started accept like he's like, the thing he said, like the, what do you say the worst 2 words are that's fine.
JordanGood job.
DariusGood job. It's like we do, we have started to too easily accept pretty good. And it does rob us of excellence in a little bit. You know, this movie just reminds me that, you know, life is about trade-offs. And A lot of people who wanted to move things in a more, gentle parenting, more understanding, more like they pretend like there's no trade-offs. And you could say the trade-offs are worth it.
JordanRight.
DariusBut, you know, we ain't no Michaels Joe Jack, you know, like, you know, like the parenting.
JordanNo beyoncé. We have no more Beyonces.
DariusI don't think gentle parenting is making great musicians. Yeah, that's true. I don't know. There are trade-offs. And you could say for the greater population, it's better to take a more gentle, holistic approach. But Miles Teller as a drummer doesn't reach these heights with a teacher that, you know, was, you know, one of these new school teachers. So.
JordanYeah, it's like, hey, good job for your first day, whatever.
DariusYou're a little out of tempo, but you know, work on it when you get home. We'll pick it up tomorrow. You know, like maybe that's not good for everybody.
JordanNot for everybody. Yeah. I think some people, if someone's really, really self-motivated, you can do that with them. I think, the importance of leadership is knowing how to talk to people, knowing when to say what to someone, knowing who, how to treat someone. You know, it's like they always say in sports, you know, some guys need a pat on the head, some guys need a kick in the *** you know, and Miles Tel's character need a kick in the ***. Like, that's just the truth.
DariusI would argue though that people who need a pat on the head typically don't achieve greatness. You know, it's Anecdotally, obviously I haven't done any research, but like the people who are motivated by hyper-competitive, challenging environments tend to have more, tend to achieve on the other end. And you know, we spoke another segment about how we always overcorrect for things. Like this guy is outrageous, but I do think, you know, We've overcorrected a bit. It's time to, like, I read somewhere that like a lot of schools don't even give homework anymore. And it's like, oh, is that a thing?
JordanI don't know that ****. That's crazy. That's kind of important.
DariusThe homework, the tests, we need to grade these papers. We need, like, the school should be hard.
JordanYeah.
DariusSchool should be hard. We're not just passing kids along. They're supposed to challenge them. It's not just like it's not the DMV where we just you get your ID, you get, you know, like we're supposed to be doing something here. So that's true.
JordanThat's very true. I was going to say, like, honestly, like my dad was not this bad, but he was a lot. He reminded me a lot of my father, the character that J.K. Simmons played in this movie. Like that was a lot of kind of how my dad parents, you know, not so much the vulgarities and stuff like that, but just the That's not good enough. Like, no, that's not good enough. You got to be. Why? did you get A? What's up with that? Like, if you brought home a 90, you could brought home a 97 in your interim. If he saw a zero, what the hell? Like, you know what I'm saying? So like, my dad was on us hard about stuff, stuff like that. And I do as a kid, like, you hated it and it was miserable. And you know, you felt like they meant your parents hated you, of course, you know, because you're young and you don't know any better and you don't have any perspective. But as an adult, I definitely see what they were trying to do, you know, both of them. And I see like, I do see the difference, too, in myself and other people where I'm like, they can't, they can't handle criticism. They can't handle a disagreement. They can't handle, you know, competition or conflict, you know, **** like that. Like that is really, really important. And I think that you have to, it sounds like a bad thing, but you have to inflict a certain level of discipline, a certain level of combativeness on a young person for them to be ready for the world.
DariusYeah, I mean, listen, structure is good. And failing is good. Like if you, learning how to do hard things is good. And I just think that, we've sort of strayed a little farther away from that than, I'd like as a society. And I think it reflects in, when they put the, when the astronauts went to the moon a couple of months ago, it was a year ago, maybe.
JordanYeah.
DariusPeople were wondering why they were like, let me, obvious reason we're going to the moon. People were just like, well, why is this capturing, you know, fracturing through it and capturing monoculture? And I just think people just miss when we chased excellence. You know, like that was a shining example of excellence. And we like the math and the engineering that went into that. And, you know, we sent the best of our best. to the moon and we got them back here alive and it went away without a hitch and we got pictures and we just, I think people like to see us chase excellence, us as a species. So yeah, for sure.
JordanI think that's the draw with, art, the arts, that's the draw with sports, like there's a reason people loved Michael Jordan. It wasn't just because he had cool shoes. It was He was literally walking excellence every night. Kobe, same thing. Bronson, whoever you love. Joe Montana, Brady, Mahomes, whoever you love, whatever. The fact that you knew that they laid it out on the line, they didn't leave any stone unturned in terms of their effort or their pursuit of greatness. We just made the joke about the time Brady sacrificed his family to try to win another Super Bowl. But he really did sacrifice his family to try to win another Super Bowl. You know, like that's not a sane thing a human, a normal human being would do. That's also why no other normal human, no other human beings have seven Super Bowls.
